SECTOR AFFECTED BY STRIKE CALL GIVEN BY CENTRAL TRADE UNIONS
The work in the banking sector
was severely affected today due to strike call given by the Central
Trade Unions, viz., AITUC, BMS, CITU, HMS, AICCTU, UTUC-LS, TUUC
and UTUC. 95% employees of different banks participated in the
strike. About 90% employees and officers in RBI participated in
the strike. 80% workers are reported to have struck work in Mumbai
Port Trust and JMPT. In Calcutta Port Trust also, the work remained
affected as about 85% workers participated in the strike. However,
Chennai Port Trust functioned almost normally with only about
300 workers out a total strength of 3,300 workers taking part
in the strike. Air India and Indian Airlines also functioned normally
except in Calcutta. The work in most of the Public Sector Undertakings
in Calcutta was affected by the strike. But in other parts of
the country, the workers did not participate in the strike in
the NTPC, Power Grid Corporation, BTPS, ONGC (except at Agartala
and Silcher), RCF Ltd., Nuclear Power Corp. of India, Goa Shipyard
Ltd., Bokaro Steel Plant, Gas Authority of India Ltd., IPCL and
SAIL. However, strike by 80% workmen is reported in HAL, Bharat
Earthmovers Ltd., Bharat Electronic Ltd. and ITI. About 90 % workers
participated in strike in the Coal fields of Coal India Ltd. 89%
workers also struck work in LIC and General Insurance Company.
IOC Refinery, Digboi, ONGC, Hazira, HPCL Jagiroad, Oil India Ltd.,
Duliajan are reported to be functioning normally. In West Bengal,
rail and public transport services remained suspended.
