CENTRAL TEAM TO ASSESS DROUGHT SITUATION IN MAHARASHTRA


The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh today met the Union Agriculture Minister, Shri Ajit Singh here and requested for assistance from the Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) and National Contingency Calamity Fund (NCCF) for the drought affected villages of the State. Shri Deshmukh told Shri Singh that due to long dry spells and erratic Monsoon drought like situation has developed in about 7500 villages of 16 districts in the State. The State Government has undertaken relief measures in these villages, he said. Shri Ajit Singh told the Chief Minister that the Centre will send a team to assess the situation in the drought affected areas and then accordingly make recommendations for assistance.

Shri Deshmukh also urged upon Shri Ajit Singh to direct General Insurance Corporation to reimburse compensation under the National Agriculture Insurance Scheme to the farmers of the drought affected areas who have lost their crops. He was assured that the Centre would ask the Insurance Corporation to quickly compensate the farmers.
