ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX NUMBERS FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS ON BASE 1982=100 FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2003


All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 1982=100 for the month of April, 2003 has increased by 6 points to stand at 493 (four hundred & ninety three). The increase in index is mainly due to rise in the prices of Rice, Groundnut Oil, mustard oil, vanaspati, fish fresh, onion, vegetables & fruits, kerosene oil, etc. All India consumer Price Index Number for April, 2002 had increased by 1 points.

The rise/fall in index varies from centre to centre. In 61 centres increase in index was noticed between 1 to 18 points, in 2 centres it remained constant and in 7 centres it recorded a decrease of 1 to 5 points when compared to previous month.

During the month Tiruchirapally centre experienced the maximum increase of 18 points on account of increase in prices of rice, Veg. & fruits, electricity charges, kerosene oil, washing soap etc. Whereas, Quilon Centre experienced the maximum decrease of 5 points. The decrease in index was due to decrease in prices of rice, coconut oil, chillies dry etc. However, the index remained stationary in 2 centres viz. Ludhiana and Chandigarh centres.

The index in respect of six main centres during April, 2003 stood at the following level:

  1. Ahmedabad 490
  2. Bangalore 475
  3. Kolkatta 545
  4. Chennai 536
  5. Delhi 568
  6. Mumbai 585

The point to point rate of inflation, based on the CPI-IW has increased from 4.06% in March 2003 to 5.12% in April, 2003. In April, 2002 it was 4.69%.
