SETTLEMENT OF INTERNAL TRANSPORT AND FREIGHT CHARGES FOR SUGAR EXPORT

FOOD MINISTRY HOLDS SPECIAL CAMPS IN STATES

Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs will be conducting special camps in different states for the speedy disposal of claims of sugar factories pertaining to reimbursement of inland transport and freight charges for export of sugar. The first such camp will be held at Pune from September 18 to 20 for sugar factories of Maharashtra. Camps will also be held in major sugar exporting states like Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. According to Shri Sharad Yadav, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, quick disposal of internal transport and freight charges on export shipments of sugar will give a boost to sugar exports from India.

In order to liquidate the surplus stock of sugar, the Government decided to promote export of sugar and offered a number of incentives. One of the incentives related to reimbursement of internal transport and freight charges for sugar factories upto the loading point at the port of export. The Government notified the necessary rules in this regard in June 2002. The settlement of the claims were not always prompt on account of the delay in most cases in getting necessary clarifications from the sugar factories particularly from the cooperative sugar factories.

The camp being held at the office of the Commissioner of Sugar, Government of Maharashtra at Pune is headed by Shri R.P. Bhagria, Director, Sugar, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
