THE PRESS INFORMATION BUREAU

THE VISION:

The Press Information Bureau, Government of India under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting aims to facilitate the dissemination of information from the Central Government to the media, both print and electronic, through more and more modern, efficient, accurate and fast systems.

  • Providing state-of-the art information retrieval facilities from its Website.

  • Developing an all encompassing electronic photo library, covering development issues as well as photographs of historic interest.

  • Providing friendly and efficient media facilitation for its clients.

THE MISSION;

The Press Information Bureau’s core functions are :-

  • Dissemination of information about government policies, programmes and activities

  • Providing feedback from the media to various government departments and public sector organisations under various Ministries on how these policies and activities are received by the people, through the media.

  • Advising the government on its information strategy

  • Giving source material and launch of multi media awareness campaigns

  • Providing explanation and background for official pronouncements

 

CLIENTS SERVICED:

The Bureau’s clients are:-

  • All Ministries/departments of the Government of India

  • The media (print & electronic, Indian and foreign)

SERVICES PROVIDED:

The Bureau provides the following services to its clients in the government:-

  • Immediate issue of press releases and /or background information as soon as an event has been held.

  • Posting of press releases and backgrounders on the Bureau’s website as soon as an event has been held

  • Providing immediate feedback to policy makers; Ministers and senior officials following a news break in the media to allow policy makers to assess its impact and make any policy correctives if found to be necessary.

The Bureau provides the following services to its clients in the media:-

  • Press releases and handouts in the form of hard copies

  • Press releases, handouts, features and photographs through our Website (pib.nic.in) and archival material through our data bank (pib.myris.com). These sites are updated till 9.00 p.m. or even later everyday.

  • Still news photos of important events – hard copies and on website- colour as well as black & whites

  • Backgrounders on important issues

  • Illustrated features and computer graphics

  • Organising press briefings and interaction with the media for providing explanation to government policies

  • Press Conferences to disseminate important and major government decisions.

  • Providing clarifications to the media on their queries, after the issue of press releases. This is done either directly by officials in the Bureau or by arranging briefings with concerned officials in the ministries.

EXPECTATIONS FROM OUR CLIENTS:

  • The Bureau expects its clients in the Government to provide the officials of the Bureau timely access to information so that the view points and programes, policies and activities of the various ministries/departments can be properly projected in the media.

MODE OF COMMUNICTION:

The Bureau provides information to tens of thousands of newspapers, electronic and other media organisations through:-

  • Despatch of press releases through e-mail

  • Despatch of photographs through e-mail

  • Posting of press releases and photographs on our Websites

  • Providing free e-mail subscription to our clients.

  • Organising press tours through PIB or through the Ministries/public sector organisations under the Ministries to projects and sites where the Government of India is undertaking major development work both in the social and infrastructure sector.

  • Setting up of Special Media Centres for events of national and international importance

  • Transmition of information through fax, e-mail, our Website, telephone, despatch rider service, and the postal system.

BUREAU’S NETWORK OF OFFICES:

  • The Bureau’s offices are located almost in all state capitals and even in some non capital towns with significant media presence.

  • The Bureau has eight regional offices in the country to disseminate information about the programmes, policies and activities of the Central Government to the media and oversee the functioning of branch offices in the region.

  • The Bureau also has 31 branch offices functioning under the regional offices in different cities to cater to the requirements of the language press.

Hear and receive grievances of staff every Monday from 15 hrs. to 16 hrs.

Any client not satisfied by any service of PIB or aggrieved by any other action of this Bureau can seek redressal of his/her grievances through Grievance Officer. Every such person shall be entitled to information about the action taken on his/her grievance within a period of 30 days from the date on which the complaint is received in this Bureau.

If clients desire to meet the Grievance Officer in connection with their grievances, they can do so without any prior appointment on aforesaid days and time.
