31st INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OF INDIA, 10-20th JANUARY-2000 NEW DELHI

    The International Film Festival of India 2000 is to be held in New Delhi from January 10 to 20, 2000. This is being organised by Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India in collaboration with Govt. of National Capital Territory of Delhi and Indian Film Industry. The 31st IFFI will be the first Film festival to be organised Internationally, in the new millennium. The opening and closing ceremonies will reflect the spirit of this occasion. A special logo has been created with sun as the symbol of life and renewed energy bringing forth new tidings in the new millennium. The festival will be announced in advance by screening the world cinema collage at India Gate, Connaught place, Delhi Haat, Railway Stations and on Indian drums from Rajasthan, Kerala and Punjab will greet the guests at Siri Fort Gardens and a special audio visual linking cinema and its influence on audiences is planned for the opening ceremony.

REGULATIONS

    Regulations duly finalised have been circulated. These regulations are in consonance with the international regulations for film festivals formulated by the Paris-based International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), with which our festival is accredited, along-with most major film festivals of the world. The regulations for IFFI’ 2000 duly printed have been circulated world-wide to invite entries to the festival.

    The festival offices will be located within the Siri Fort, New Delhi.

TICKET RATES

    The proposed ticket rates for IFFI’2000 are as under: -

  1. For Asian Competition Section Balcony : Rs. 60/-, Main Hall : Rs. 40/- and Rs. 30/-
  2. For Cinema of the World Section Balcony : Rs. 80/-, Main Hall : Rs. 60/- and Rs. 40/-
  3. For Foreign Retrospectives/Tributes Main Hall : Rs. 60/- and Rs. 40/-
  4. For Indian Panorama Balcony : Rs. 60/-, Main Hall : Rs. 40/- and Rs. 30/-
  5. For Mainstream Indian Cinema Main Hall : Rs. 60/- and Rs. 40/-

FESTIVAL LOGO AND POSTER

    The festival logo has been created with sun as the symbol of life and energy. Two posters – one dedicated to the 31st International Film Festival of India and the other to the Indian Panorama Section – are bring brought out on the occasion.

FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

    The programme of the festival will be divided into the following broad categories:

  1. ASIAN COMPETITION SECTION

    The highlight of this festival would be the Asian competition section, which would present the latest cinematic trends in Asia which would be screened to an International Jury of five members. This section would consider prizes for the ‘Best film’ by an Asian Director, ‘Most Promising Asian Director’ and a ‘Special Jury’ Award. This section will consist of attractive cash prizes payable in USD, a medal and a certificate.

  1. CINEMA OF THE WORLD

    This section will consist of about 60-70 films, from about 35 countries, made in the last two years, representing the best of the latest in world cinema. These will include films which have won awards or have received critical acclaim. Films from most film producing countries, including third world countries, will be included, with a view to providing a glimpse of current cinematic trends in as wide a cross-section of nations as is possible.

  1. RETROSPECTIVES/TRIBUTES

    Among others, this section will includes "India and International Screens," a package of films that try to promote India as a focal point in the world of International movie.

    1. Retrospective of Roberto Rossellini (ITALY)
    2. Retrospective of Karen Shakhnazarov (RUSSIA)
    3. Focus on cinema of AUSTRALIA
    4. Perspective – CHINA and
    5. One film tributes to Cinema Greats – Chen Kaige (CHINA), Fernando E. Solanas (ARGENTINA), Bibi Anderson (SWEDEN) and Abbas Kiarostami (IRAN)
    6. Homage to Ritwik Ghatak
    7. Life time achievement award
  1. INDIAN PANORAMA

        Sixteen feature and nineteen non-feature Indian films selected by a selection panel of eminent film personalities under Indian Panorama scheme will be screened under this section.

  1. MAINSTREAM INDIAN CINEMA

    Twelve popular Indian films released during 1998 and in 1999 will be screened during the Festival.

BUSINESS CENTRE

    A Business Centre will be organised by in the festival complex at Siri Fort.

DELEGATES

    As in the past about 3000 delegates may be registered for the festival, including foreign and Indian delegates. The foreign delegates would include film personalities, directors, actors, actresses, producers, representatives of film organisations, International film festival directors and selectors and journalists. The Indian delegates will include Indian Panorama directors, producers, actors, actresses as well as film industry delegates from all over the country who will be accredited through film industry organisation and associations, in accordance with established norms and quotas decided in consultation with the Film Industry Co-ordination Committee.

PRESS RELATIONS

    As in previous years, films journalists and critics from all over the country will be accredited to the festival. An Accreditation Committee headed by the Principal Information Officer to the Government of India will go through the applications and select critics for accreditation on the basis of well established norms. Foreign journalists will also be given the same facilities as are available to the Indian journalists. The Media Centre will be handled by the Press Information Bureau.

SEMINARS

    A seminar will be organised by FFSI entitled "CINEMA IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM".

OPEN FORUM

    During previous festivals, the local branch of the federation of Film Societies of India (in the city where the festival was held) has organised an open forum for initiating a dialogue between filmmakers, critics, delegates and the discerning public. This has proved to be popular, as it provides participants with a platform to meet and exchange views. The Federation of Film Societies of Indian will be organising such an open forum during IFFI ‘2000’ also.

EXHIBITIONS

    Several special exhibitions are being set up during the Festival. The special feature is an installation in the main foyer of Siri Fort I entitled "MAGIC OF CINEMA".

INAUGURAL FUNCTION

    The Inaugural Function of the 31st International Film Festival of India, i.e., IFFI ‘2000’ will be held on the evening of 10th January, 2000 at Siri Fort Auditorium – I, New Delhi.

SETTING UP OF UNITS

    Twenty – five different units have been set up for the conduct of the festival.

INPUTS FROM STATE GOVERNMENTS

    The State Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi is actively collaborating with the Directorate of Film Festivals for the smooth conduct of the festival both financially and organisationally.

BUDGET

    The Ministry has sanctioned a budget of Rs. 1.35 crores. This will be supplemented by State Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, which has contributed Rs. 1.08 crores.
