    Metallurgical and Engineering Consultants (India) Ltd. (MECON), a Government of India enterprise, was set up in 1959 to render consultancy, detailed engineering and technical services to the Indian iron and steel industry. With headquarters at Ranchi, Bihar, the organization, over the last four decades, has been intimately associated with various facets of development on the country’s fast changing industrial front. It has emerged as India’s frontline design, engineering, consultancy and contracting organization, handling numerous prestigious consultancy assignments and turnkey contracts at home and abroad.

    Keeping pace with the constantly changing demands of the free Indian market, MECON has diversified far beyond ferrous metallurgy to encompass non-ferrous metals, coal carbonization, chemicals and petrochemicals, oil and gas including pipelines, power projects, ocean engineering, environmental engineering, water supply, roads, ports, computer, software development and a host of other fields. In recent years, it has identified petrochemicals, oil and gas pipelines, power and infrastructure as major thrust areas and achieved considerable success in procuring jobs from these potential sectors.

Industry’s Think Tank

    With 1600 topflight engineers and technologists MECON manages some 35 disciplines, a network of 30 offices spread over the country. It handles over 2300 consultancy assignments and Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts worth over Rs.200 crore with an annual turnover of Rs.250 crore, the company is playing a pivotal role in developing design and engineering capabilities in the country.


    To bridge the technological gap, MECON has developed a complete blend of expertise for basic and detailed design of equipment and systems for rolling mills, coke ovens, blast furnaces, continuous casting plants, power plants, materials handling plants and chemical plants. This is a unique feature of MECON as no other consultancy organisation of the country has made so much thrust in the area of equipment and systems design and supply.


        MECON has acquired, absorbed and innovated technologies to suit the needs of clients. It has designed and supplied several sophisticated hot and cold rolling mills and processing lines to various clients in India and aboard. It has developed and commercialised a 6-Hi mill with the support of Department of Science and Technology. It has developed its own design of coke oven batteries and is one amongst the few in the world to have the know-how in this area. In the area of blast furnace MECON has undertaken modernising, technological upgradation, engineering and supply of equipment for various steel plants in the country. It has designed and supplied a benzol plant based on state-of-the-art hydro-refining technology to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

    MECON is engaged in providing services to commission electrolytic manganese dioxide plant, titanium sponge plant and heavy alloy penetrator projects based on the know-how generated by various research institutes. It has been playing a vital role in transforming concepts developed by national labs and R&D organisations into commercial plants.

    MECON offers a complete spectrum of consultancy and engineering services in the field of environment. It has rendered services to various projects funded by multilateral agencies like World Bank, Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, Development Financial Institute and other industries like Steel Authority India Ltd. (SAIL), National Fertilizer Corporation (NFC), Indian Rare Earth Ltd.,(IREL), Hindustan Copper Ltd. (HCL), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (HZI), Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd. (BALCO), Ferro Alloys Corporation (FACOR) and Tata Iron and Steel Company, for their pollution control projects.

    MECON is the first engineering consultancy organisation in the country to be accredited with the prestigious ISO-9001 certification for design and engineering, consultancy, contracting and supply, inspection and project management services in industrial sectors like iron and steel and sectors like non-ferrous, power, chemical, refractories, ocean engineering and environmental engineering.
