Shri Mansukh Mandaviya informs about scheme to prevent collision of ships off Indian coast

Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Chemicals & Fertilizers,informed Lok Sabha in reply to a question yesterday thatit is proposed to establish a Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in order to prevent collision between ships /Indian merchant vessels and fishing vessels off the Indian coast. This will consist of lanes for opposing traffic with a 5 nautical miles width and a separation zone of 1 nautical mile, making an overall width of 11 nautical miles at a distance of about 90 nautical miles west of Karwarin Karnataka. It will lead in a south easterly direction to the southernmost tip, which is about 40 nautical miles south of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The proposed TSS between two tips is located at an average distance of about 60 nautical miles from the coast. Moreover, safety advisories are being promulgated regularly through satellite and terrestrial methods to all vessels.
