Vice Admiral Arun Prakash,PVSM,AVSM,VrC,VSM,ADC will be the new Naval Chief
Vice Admiral Arun Prakash, PVSM, AVSM, VrC, VSM,ADC will be the next Chief of the Naval Staff. He will take over from Admiral Madhvendra Singh on 31 July 2004.

Promoted to Rear Admiral in 1993, he served as ACNS (Air), Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet and Assistant Chief of Personnel. In the rank of Vice Admiral, he has been Commandant National Defence Academy (1997-99) and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters (1999-2001). In Oct 2001, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the newly created Unified Andaman & Nicobar Command and served in that capacity till taking over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command on 31 Dec 2002. On 17 Oct 2003, he took over as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.

Vice Admiral Prakash graduated from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla in Jun 64 and was commissioned into the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy on 01 Jan 1966. He specialized in aviation, and qualified as a carrier pilot on the Sea Hawk jet fighter in 1968. He has subsequently flown 2500 hours on a variety of single and multi-engineered aircraft from the aircraft carrier and ashore. Also a graduate of the IAF Test Pilots School, the Defence Services Staff College, and the US Naval War College, he has served afloat, in command of the missile boat INS Chatak, the frigates INS Beas and INS Vindhyagiri, and the aircraft carrier INS Viraat. His aviation tenures include the command of two Air Squadrons, and the Naval Air Station INS Hansa. He was in command of INAS 300 when this squadron was re-equipped with the Sea Harrier VSTOL fighter in the UK in 1983.

As a young Lieutenant, during the 1971 war, Vice Admiral Arun Prakash served with an IAF fighter-bomber squadron, and was awarded the Vir Chakra for gallantry in air action over West Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir. He is the recipient of the Vishisht Seva Medal (1985), the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (1991) and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2002) for distinguished services rendered.

VAdm Prakash comes from a military background, his two elder brothers having served in the Indian Army. Married to Kumkum (nee Chatterjee), VAdm Prakash has a daughter who is married to a former IAF pilot.
