Commemorative postage stamp on C.D. Deshmukh
A commemorative postage stamp on C.D. Deshmukh will be released by the Speaker, Lok Sabha, Shri Manohar Joshi at a function at Mumbai on January 14, 2004. Issued by the Department of Posts (DoP), the stamp is in the denomination of Rs.5/-

Born on January 14, 1896, Chintaman Dwarkanath Deshmukh started his career in the Indian Civil Service in 1920. In 1943, he became the first Indian Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, which he served till 1949. He reinforced the Department of Research and Statistics at the Bank, and was responsible for the assertion of the independence of the Bank from the Government of India and its Finance Department. He was also Governor for India on the Executive Boards of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Deshmukh was appointed Finance Minister in 1950. He became the first Chairman of the University Grants Commission after his resignation as Finance Minister in 1956. After his marriage to Durgabai, he was deeply involved in the social work that she did. He received the Magsaysay award for Government Service in 1959. In 1975, the Padma Vibhushan was conferred on him and his wife. Deshmukh passed away on October 2, 1982.
