Smt. Krishna Tirath, Minister for Women & Child Development addressed the first meeting of the reconstituted High Level Committee on Status of Women, here today.

Speaking at the occasion, Smt. Krishna Tirath expressed her happiness that the Committee constituted after 42 years will look into various aspects of the status of women from various sections of society. The Minister stated that there are sufficient rules and legislations to protect the women. The Constitution of India has provided equal status and rights to women. However, in practice, it is not so, she stated. The Minister said that the women from various sections of society face discrimination and violence within and outside their households irrespective of their status in the society. It is therefore important, she emphasized, to spread the awareness amongst the women at the grassroots level of their rights and entitlements. It is also pertinent, she noted, that status of women be known and policies be framed for their active participation in various sectors in the country. Although women play a very important role in the households, their work is rarely recognized, she stated.

Smt. Tirath expressed concern over the rising cases of violence against small children and women. The Minister has stressed upon making Ahimsa Messengers at the grassroots level and training them, to spread awareness about the legal provisions, rights and schemes of the Government, amongst the women. These would include the Panchayat leaders and workers, along with Anganwadi workers and Asha workers.

The Government of India had set up a High Level Committee on the Status of Women to undertake comprehensive study to understand the status of women since 1989 as well as to evolve appropriate policy interventions based on a contemporary assessment of women’s needs vide this Ministry’s Resolutions No. 4-5/2009-WW dated the 27th February, 2012 and 29th June, 2012 comprising of the Chairperson, Member Secretary and seventeen Members.
