World Heritage Sites

LOK SABHA

The Minister for Tourism and Culture Smt. Ambika Soni said that the following heritage sites in India have been proposed for nominations as World Heritage sites :

Cultural Sites

2007         Red Fort Complex, Delhi (already inscribed)

2008        (i)   Majuli Island,

                (ii) Kalka-Shimla Railway

Natural Site

2009          Western Ghats (serial nomination)

                        State-wise details of the monuments/sites declared as World Heritage sites in India is at Annexure 'A'.

                        As per the guidelines laid down by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, 15 sites under the Cultural category and 4 sites under the Natural category in India  have already been included  in the UNESCO Tentative List. Details are at Annexure 'B'.

Monuments inscribed on the World Heritage List attain international status. This increases visitors' flow, both domestic and foreign, which contributes to the economic growth of the region and the monument receives special attention in terms of management, conservation and protection etc.

In reply to another question for Ministry of Tourism she said the Brahmaputra Board under the Ministry of Water Resources has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the protection of Majuli Island from flood and erosion for an amount of Rs.86.56 crores. Brahmaputra Board has taken up the works, as per approved DPR, to be executed in three phases. Phase wise break up is given below:

Phase I:            Rs.41.28 crores

Phase II:             Rs.18.28 crores

Phase III:             Rs.27.00 crores

Phase I started in 2005. So far an expenditure of Rs.21.86 crores has been incurred.
