| Modernization/Expansion of Airports |
Shri Ajit Singh, the Minister of Civil Aviation informed Lok Sabha today in a written reply that a Task Force was constituted by the Committee on Infrastructure for going into the requirement for expansion and upgradation of the airport infrastructure in the country. This Task Force identified 35 non metro airports of Airports Authority of India (AAI) for expansion and upgradation taking into account factors such as potential for traffic, tourism potential, non-aeronautical revenues enhancement by exploitation of surplus land, and connectivity with state capital. In addition to these 35 airports, based on the traffic demand and operational requirements, work has been taken up for expansion of air/terminal side infrastructure at 27 additional non-metro airports of AAI.
The Minister further informed that the airports at Bhopal and Indore in Madhya Pradesh have already been modernized and put into operation. AAI plan to extend the runway and other associated facilities at Tuticorin airport in Tamil Nadu, subject to 586 acres of land to be made available by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Funds allocated for Tuticorin in the BE 2012-13 is Rs 10 lakhs. Allocation in response of airports in Madhya Pradesh is Rs 6.34 crores.
