Regional Consultation on Violence Against Children at Colombo

The South Asia follow up on the regional consultation on the UN Study on Violence Against Children is being held at Colombo between 27-31 May 2012. The follow up will review the existing legislations regarding prevention of violence against children in all forms, in the SAARC countries, and recommend changes to these. Representatives from governments of SAARC countries, UN agencies, civil society members and experts will be contributing to the consultation. This is taking place under aegis of SAIEVAC, the South Asian Initiative to End Violence Against Children.

SAIEVAC was formed as an outcome of the regional consultations in Islamabad in 2005 subsequent to the recommendations of the Committee on the Rights of the Child (made in 2001), after which the United Nations General Assembly called for a global study on violence against children. A regional consultation was held at Islamabad where representatives of SAARC countries, UN Study Secretariat, civil society members, bilateral agencies, experts, and various resource persons deliberated on measures to end violence against children. SAIEVAC was earlier known as the “South Asia Forum for Ending Violence Against Children” (SAF).

The Islamabad consultation resulted in recommendations to end violence against children at home, in schools, in institutions, and in community. The cross cutting recommendations included several measures to end physical, mental and sexual violence against children such as accountability and monitoring of implementation of laws; development and allocation of resources to support implementation of legislation; capacity building of all stakeholders of the judicial process (including juvenile justice system); improved coordination between all organizations within the region working on child rights; legal awareness and capacity building among people; and appointing ombudsperson for children.
