| National Workshop on Farm Statistics begins;
Stress on Capturing Accurate Data
|
The two-day National Workshop on Improvement of Agricultural Statistics with the call to use all available tools to collect field data as accurately as possible began here today.
Highlighting the importance of correct data in policy formulation Agriculture Secretary, Shri Ashish Bahuguna called upon statisticians, economists and field functionaries to capture the data accurately and validate it with the help of satellite imagery and secondary sources of data.
The issue of wide variations in the area and production estimates of crops over successive advance and final estimates continues to be a cause of concern. Therefore one has to be more cautious, systematic and meticulous in arriving at the estimates. The final area and production estimates could be worked out on the basis of proper field enumeration and assessment of ground realities on yield levels, Shri Bahuguna said.
The secretary also showed concern about the estimation of cotton production in the country. He said that there is a need to address this problem and arrive at realistic estimates of cotton production in the country for proper trade policy on cotton.
