649 INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS IN 5 CITIES HAVE BEEN FINANCED UNDER MEGA CITY SCHEME

  The Mega City Scheme to address infrastructure needs of 5 major cities(excluding Delhi) with population of 4 million and above as per 1991 census, has assisted 649 projects till date in the cities of Calcutta, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. Total central share of Rs. 1183.36 crores which is 25% of the estimated cost of the projects is Rs. 7544.66 crores has been released so far. As on date 377 projects approved under the scheme have been completed and 163 are in progress. 109 projects which have already been approved are yet to take off. Rs. 220 crores have been allocated during this financial year of which Rs. 150 crores have been released.

This scheme which was launched in 1993-94 intends to assist development of city wide infrastructure like water supply, sewerage, drainage, flyovers, bridges, subways, traffic lighting, land development, slum development, solid waste management, shopping and commercial complex, etc. The funding pattern of this is 25% each by central and state governments with 50% coming from institutional of finance/own resources.
