PRESIDENT TO CONFER 56TH NATIONAL FILM AWARDS

  The 56th National Film Awards for 2008 will be presented to the winners by the Hon’ble President Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil on March 19th 2010 in New Delhi. The legendary Cinematographer Shri V K Murthy will also receive the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the year 2008 in the ceremony scheduled to be held at Vigyan Bhawan on Friday the 19th March 2010. It may be recalled that the 56th National Film Awards for 2008 were announced on the 23rd of January 2010 and the announcement for the 2008 Dada Saheb Phalke award was done on the 19th of January 2010.

Among notable winners who would personally receive the award from Hon’ble President include: Director Anirudh Roy Choudhary (Swaran Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 2,50, 000/- for his Best Feature film “Antaheen” (Bengali)); Director Neeraj Pandey and Sh. Ronnie Screwwala of UTV Motion Pictures would also receive the Swaran Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 1,25,000/- for the Indira Gandhi Award for Best First film - “A Wednesday” (Hindi); Director Dibakar Banerjee to receive Swarna Kamal medal and a cash prize of Rs. 2,00,000/- for Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment - “Oye Lucky! Lucy Oye” (Hindi); Director Abhaya Simha to receive Swarna Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 1,50,000/- for Best Children’s Film - ‘Gubbachigalu” (Kannada); Director Jugal Hansraj to receive Swarna Kamal and cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- for Best Animation Film - “Roadside Romeo” (Hindi); Director Bala to receive Swarna Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 2,50,000/- for “Naan Kadauul” (Tamil); Upendra Limaye to receive Rajat Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- for Best Actor in Marathi film ‘Jogva’; Priyanka Chopra to receive Rajat Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- for Best Actress in “Fashion” (Hindi); Arjun Rampal to receive Rajat Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- for Best Supporting Actor in “Rock On” (Hindi); Kangana Ranaut to receive Rajat Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- for Best Supporting Actress in “Fashion” (Hindi); Master Shams Patel to receive Rajat Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 50,000/-for Best Child Artist in “Thanks Maa” (Hindi) and Hariharan to receive Rajat Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- for Best Male Playback Singer for “Jogva”.

In the Non-Feature Film category, Director Haobam Paban Kumar to receive Swarna Kamal Medal and cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- for Best Non-feature film “AFSPA 1958 and Director Umesh Kulkarni to receive Swarna Kamal Medal and cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- for Best Direction for “Three of Us”. Ganesh Anantharaman to receive a Swarna Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 75,000/- for Best Book on Cinema “Bollywood Melodies” (English) and Altaf Mazid and R.K.Bidur Singh to receive Swarna Kamal medal and cash prize of Rs. 75,000/- under Best Film Critic category.

The NFA 2008 Feature Film Jury was headed by Shri Shaji N. Karun. Members - Shri Roshan Taneja, Shri H.M. Ramachandra, Ms Nagma, Shri Satyabrata Kalita, Shri Neelakanta, Shri Dilip Ghosh, Shri Swapan Mullick, Shri Sudesh Syal, Shri S.K. Srivastava, Ms Archana, Shri B. Shashi Kumar, Shri Subhash Sehgal, Shri Santosh Desai and Ms Sreelekha Mukherjee were involved in judging the 126 entries for feature film categories for the 56th National Film Awards.

Ninety nine entries for non-feature film section were viewed by jury headed by Ms Arunaraje Patil and Shri Krishnendu Bose, Shri Anirban Dutta, Shri Sandeep Marwah, Shri R. V. Ramani, Shri Sarfaraz Siddiqui and Ms Reena Mohan as members.

The Jury on Best Writing on Cinema headed by Shri Sunil Gangopadhyay, assisted by Shri Sudhish Pachauri and Shri Ziya-us Salam considered 20 entries of books and 17 entries for Film Critics category.

The National Film Awards aim at encouraging the production of films of aesthetic and technical excellence and social relevance contributing to the understanding and appreciation of cultures of different regions of the country in cinematic form, thereby also promoting integration and unity of the nation. With the completion of National Film Awards 2008, all previous backlogs would now be covered and the calendar for announcements of the next National Film Awards 2009 would be as per schedule in September/October 2010.
