In Haryana, the BJP and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) fought the General Elections to the 13th Lok Sabha as alliance partners. Of the 10 seats in the state, both the parties contested and won 5 seats each, with the Congress ending up as runner up in all the constituencies.
Of all the ballots cast, the BJP and the INLD secured 20,36,797 i.e.. 29.21% votes and 20,02,700 i.e. 28.72% votes respectively. The Congress polled 24,35,752 votes i.e. 34.93% vote share, more than the BJP and INLD, but the votes did not translate into seats.
The other Parties, the Bahujan Samaj Party, Janata Dal (Secular) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) which had contested 3, 1 and 1 seats respectively could collect only 1.96%, 0.02% and 0.15% votes.
The highest poll percentage was 70.26 in the Bhiwani Lok Sabha constituency and the lowest was 56.76 in the Faridabad constituency.
Out of the 114 candidates who threw their hats in the electoral ring in the ’99 Lok Sabha polls as many as 93 forfeited their security deposits.
The Bhiwani seat had the largest number of candidates in the fray-29 while Sonepat constituency had only 6.
There were as many as 74 Independent Candidates who between them could corner only 1.61% votes.
