Replacement of Un-manned Railway crossings with Subways

The Ministry of Railways has given powers to General Managers of all Zonal Railways to sanction Limited Height Sub-ways depending upon site conditions, costing up-to Rs. 45 lakhs each. Replacement of Unmanned Level Crossing by Limited Height Subways are based on criteria of safety, closure of nearby level crossing, local road user's requirement etc. All Zonal Railways have been advised to identify the level crossings which could be replaced by Limited Height Subways and sanction them for their replacement.

As on 31.07.2007, Zonal Railways have identified 446 level crossings for replacement by Limited Height Subways. Out of this, 181 level crossings are located over Southern Railway. This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri R.Velu in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
