To strengthen the Mumbai Suburban Railway System, a project Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) Phase-I has been taken up for execution. The total cost of rail component Phase-I is Rs. 3125 crore. It is being funded by World Bank, Government of Maharashtra and Ministry of Railways as per the details below:-
World Bank : Rs. 1613 Crore
Govt. of Maharashtra : Rs. 756 Crore
Ministry of Railways : Rs. 756 Crore
As Government of Maharashtra is sharing 50% of the cost of the rail component of MUTP, the World Bank’s funds are also to be shared equally between Ministry of Railways and Government of Maharashtra. The entire project is targeted for completion by May’ 2009.
