Certain misleading and misinformed news items have appeared in a section of the Press alleging that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, in violation of the Model Code of Conduct of Elections, has made appointment to the post of Vice-Chairman, University Grants Commission and has granted extension of five years to the present Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia.
As regards the appointment of Professor Ved Prakash as Vice-Chairman, UGC, it is clarified that his appointment has been made by the Central Government on the recommendations of a duly constituted Search-cum-Selection Committee, strictly in accordance with the UGC Act, 1956, after obtaining the necessary clearance from the Election Commission of India, through the Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India.
The present Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, Professor Mushirul Hasan, is completing his term in Office on 6th June, 2009. The Search-cum-Selection Committee duly constituted under the Jamia Millia Islamia Act, 1988 for the appointment of the next Vice-Chancellor, has not yet given its recommendations for consideration of the Visitor. As such, the news item appearing on the subject in a section of the Press alleging that the present Vice-Chancellor has been given another term of 5 years, is totally baseless and ill-informed.
