Ship for scrap carrying carcinogenic asbestos insulation

The Danish Government have informed the Indian Government regarding arrival of a ship in India for dismantling carrying asbestos which is used as insulation of the machinery. It has also been mentioned that as per the Danish legislation on wastes, the said ship is characterised as waste.

The ship was beached at Alang on 3.4.2005. The officers from Customs, Gujarat Maritime Board, Central Pollution Control Board and Gujarat Pollution Control Board have verified and found that there is no hazardous waste on board of the ship.

This information was given by Minister of State for Environment and Forests Shri Namo Narain Meena in a written reply to Member of Parliament, Shri Ekanath K. Thakur in the Rajya Sabha today.
