Adopt ‘SRI’ for better rice yields

The Government has advised farmers to adopt ‘System of Rice Intensification (SRI)’ wherever it is feasible for better yields. Agricultural experts have advised farmers to apply Zinc Sulphate as per local nutrient status of Zinc in the soil for the ensuing kharif season. Practice 10 tonnes of green manuring per hectare for reducing dose of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potash (K). Use drum seeder to reduce the cost of production. Sowing of sprouted seeds after 12-24 hours of puddling with drum seeder and weeding with conoweeder is helpful in achieving higher grain yield, farm experts have advised.
Using Chlorophyll meter would reduce requirement of nitrogenous fertilizers. Regular application of 10 tonnes of Farm Yard Manure per hectare would contribute in enhancement of soil health and sustain rice productivity in the long run.
Agricultural experts have advised farmers to grow only recommended hybrid rice varieties. The State agriculture departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and extension machinery should take necessary steps to create awareness for large-scale adoption of hybrid rice cultivation.
As far as Basmati rice cultivation is concerned, time of harvesting is the most important factor, as it influences aroma and quality. Delayed harvest leads to grain shedding and fissure formation in rice, resulting in breakage during processing. Harvesting of crop, when grain moisture ranges between 20 to 22 percent, gives maximum yield and head rice recovery.
